Definition of Pirate Radio: The disobedience of a power's rules on radio.
A pirate does not necessarily have to operate without a license, collect revenue hidden from empire building, play radical music, or be chased by vans with funny rotating antennas on top.  To be sanctioned by the government does not mean that your are not a pirate.
James Madison's First Amendment: No licenses.  Keep the pirate in pirate radio.
Empirical vs. Wireless Studio:
An empirical pirate station is simply a tiny DJ station with mixers, turntables, CD players, etc.
The wireless studio is a different system.  Audio is developed by and brought to the transmitter(s) through other radio devices, such as CB radios.  Both sides of two-way communications can be broadcast and switching between remote sites is easy.  In its simplest form, the wireless studio is the cheapest way to get on the air.
In either type of station, it's important that the equipment can all be operated portably (12 VDC).

Modifying CB Radios for Broadcast Transcription Audio:
The hobby broadcaster generally has a difficult and expensive task in assembling a complex and useful station.  One alternative solution offers a substantial savings and unique, flexible options.  Modifying CB radios to carry and receive appropriate audio eliminates the need for an audio compressor, separates the studio from the transmitter, offers multichannel capability, makes child's play out of community reporting, and opens another door for friends of community radio.   (Originally published in Hobby Broadcasting, Winter 1998/1999)
"All radio signals are non-private, as was originally granted by the Communications Act of 1934."
"Selecting power is simple.
1. Your transmitter will use less power than a couple of light bulbs.
2. Quadrupling your power will double your range, thus quadrupling the people who will hear you."
