HFF 136 The Flintstones (1994) Superbly written themes and ironies join with first class jokes in this overlooked film. Fred Flintstone's precious deed of helping the Rubbles adopt their little Bam-Bam is returned by neighbor/coworker Barney Rubble's switching their aptitude tests at work. The repayment gets Fred promoted up to vice president of industrial procurement, to execute boss Cliff van der Cave's directive "Fire Barney or I'll fire you". Fred's rise in society promotes ego and snobbery until Cliff's embezzlement scheme drops on Fred. Now a fugitive, Fred loses family, self esteem and almost his life along with Barney's but are saved by an abused dictation bird and their wives. Comics/cartoons into real life is a rare film genre maybe only twice executed well by "The Flintstones" and by HFF 9 "Popeye" (1980). Flintstones becomes a ten star film through scenes such as Wilma walking out on Fred to the banter that she'll "COME CRAWLING BACK......please". The Flintstones takes flack for the Disney share in the National Association of Broadcasters lack of conscious, but nowhere is this in the film. Instead it proves on and off the screen that empires are empires but people are people. Prof. Alex Klystron
